Hip & Pelvis Goniometry

Hip Flexion

  • Normal Values: 110-120 degrees

  • Plane: sagittal around a medial -lateral axis

  • Testing position: supine

  • End-feel: Soft

  • Goniometer Alignment:

    • Fulcrum: greater trochanter

    • Stationary arm: lateral midline of the pelvis

    • Moving arm: lateral midline of femur

Hip Abduction

  • Normal values: 40-42 degrees

  • Plane: frontal plane around an anterior-posterior axis

  • Testing position: supine

  • End-feel: firm

  • Goniometer Alignment:

    • Fulcrum: ASIS

    • Stationary arm: horizontal line from one ASIS to the other

    • Moving arm: anterior midline of femur/middle of patella

Hip Adduction

  • Normal Values: 20 degrees

  • Plane: frontal plane around an anterior-posterior axis

  • Testing position: supine

  • End-feel: firm

  • Goniometer Alignment:

    • Fulcrum: ASIS

    • Stationary arm: horizontal line from one ASIS to the other

    • Moving arm: anterior midline of the femur/ middle of patella

Hip Extension

  • Normal Values: 20-30 degrees

  • Plane: sagittal around a medial-lateral axis

  • Testing Position: prone

  • End-feel: firm

  • Goniometer Alignment:

    • Fulcrum: greater trochanter

    • Stationary arm: lateral midline of pelvis

    • Moving arm: lateral midline of the femur

Hip Internal Rotation

  • Normal Value: 40 degrees

  • Plane: transverse plane around a vertical axis

  • Testing position: hook-seated

  • End-Feel: firm

  • Goniometer Alignment:

    • Fulcrum: anterior aspect of patella

    • Stationary arm: perpendicular to the floor or parallel to suppporting surface

    • Moving arm: anterior midline of lower leg

Hip External Rotation

  • Normal Values: 45-50 degrees

  • Plane: transverse plane around a longitudinal axis

  • Testing position: hook-seated

  • End-feel: firm

  • Goniometer Alignment:

    • Fulcrum: anterior aspect of patella

    • Stationary arm: perpendicular to the floor or parallel to supporting surface

    • Moving arm: anterior midline of lower leg
